Privacy & Data Policy

Effective September 2026

TypeThatBook is a typing-practice website used in Computer Science classes in Sumner County Schools. It was created, and is run, by Jake Wilson, a Sumner County Schools Computer Science teacher. This page explains what information TypeThatBook collects about students, why, who can see it, how long it is kept, and how a parent or guardian can review it or have it deleted.

In short

Children's privacy (COPPA)

Many TypeThatBook users are under 13, so it is covered by the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This page is TypeThatBook's notice under that law. TypeThatBook is used as part of classroom instruction with the approval of the school. Under COPPA, a school may consent on parents' behalf to an educational service that is used only for school purposes and never for commercial purposes; TypeThatBook is used only for the class, and the school provides that consent. Before their class uses TypeThatBook, each teacher confirms that their school has approved it and consents on parents' behalf, and that confirmation is recorded with its date. Parents and guardians keep the rights described under Parents' and guardians' rights, below.

Tennessee's Student Online Personal Protection Act also applies, to students of every age. TypeThatBook follows it: no targeted advertising, no profiles built for non-school purposes, no sale of student information, reasonable security, and deletion when the school asks.

What we collect, and why

InformationWhy it is needed
Name and school email address, from the student's school Google account So the teacher can tell which student's work is which
An account ID (a random identifier created at sign-in) To connect a student's practice to their account
Class and school So each teacher sees only their own students
Typing practice: time spent, characters typed, speed, accuracy, and which book or lesson This is the practice the class grades
Lesson progress and reading position in each book So a student can pick up where they left off
Initials the student chooses, and game scores For the class leaderboard

TypeThatBook does not collect home addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, photos, audio or video, location, student ID numbers, or any health, disability or demographic information. Students never create a password on TypeThatBook, and are never asked for more information than taking part in the class requires.

How information is used

Student information is used only to run TypeThatBook for the class: to save each student's progress, and to show teachers how much their students have practised. It is not used for advertising, is not analysed or "mined" for any other purpose, is not sold or rented, and is not shared with anyone for marketing. TypeThatBook uses no analytics or tracking services.

Who can see it

These limits are enforced on Google's servers for every request, not just in the website, so they cannot be bypassed from a browser.

Other companies involved

ServiceWhat it receivesWhy
Google Firebase (Google LLC) The information described above Storing it securely, and signing students in with their school accounts
Google reCAPTCHA (Google LLC) Technical information about the browser and device Checking that requests come from the real TypeThatBook site, to protect it from misuse
GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc.) The standard information any website receives when a page loads Serving the website's pages

These services are used only to run TypeThatBook. None of them receives student information for advertising. TypeThatBook's database is located in the United States.

Cookies and browser storage

TypeThatBook uses no advertising or tracking cookies. To keep a student signed in, Google's sign-in service stores a token in the browser. TypeThatBook also saves some things in the browser itself — a guest's progress, settings, and temporary copies of data so pages load faster. Google reCAPTCHA may set a cookie as part of its security check.

Students who don't sign in

A student who uses TypeThatBook without signing in is a guest. A guest's progress is kept only in their own browser, and nothing about them is stored on TypeThatBook's servers. If that student later signs in on the same browser, their guest practice is added to their account.

How long information is kept

Typing records are kept while a student is actively using TypeThatBook, and are deleted after 24 months with no typing of any kind — in the Library, the lessons or the games. Accounts are checked every quarter. Computer Science is taught in nine-week rotations, so a student can go more than a year between one grade's class and the next; keeping records for 24 months means a returning student keeps their lesson progress, while the records of students who have left are removed. An account with no typing ever recorded is reviewed individually rather than removed automatically, since it may belong to a new student who has not started yet.

When a parent or the school asks for a student's information to be deleted, everything is removed: their typing records, lesson progress, reading positions, game scores — including any leaderboard place — and their TypeThatBook sign-in account. When an account is deleted because it hasn't been used for 24 months, the same is removed, except that a leaderboard place the student still holds is kept by their initials alone, as described under "Who can see it". A student's sign-in account is deleted once their records have been removed and the account hasn't been used for 24 months.

Parents' and guardians' rights

A parent or guardian may at any time:

To make a request, email privacy@misterwilson.org, call (615) 379-7226, or contact your child's school. So that a child's information is only ever given to their own parent or guardian, we confirm the request through the school before acting on it. Requests are completed within 30 days. A student whose information has been deleted will start TypeThatBook from the beginning if they use it again.

How it is protected

Every request to the database is checked against security rules, all traffic is encrypted, students sign in with their school Google accounts (TypeThatBook never sees a password), and staff can see only the students they need to. The full written security program is published as TypeThatBook's security program. If student information were ever accessed by someone who should not have it, the school would be told promptly.

Teacher and staff accounts

Teachers and administrators also sign in with their school Google accounts. TypeThatBook stores their name, school email, role, and the schools and classes they are assigned to, so that each person sees only the students they should.

Changes to this policy

If TypeThatBook ever starts collecting a new kind of information or using it in a new way, this page will be updated first and the school will be told. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
